Ass_essments from an Indignant Citizen is a deeply political series. In it, Henkes alters books containing photographs of political leaders by sitting directly on their faces, leaving behind a painted imprint of her body.
Although the gesture itself is simple, its repetition transforms it into a sustained expression of indignation: an unequivocal response to the frustration caused by our leaders’ failures, their disastrous mismanagement and their irresponsibility towards the citizens they serve, all of which contribute to the erosion of our democracy.
The series features politicians from the United States, Spain and elsewhere. Sitting on their portraits, a seemingly banal gesture, becomes a means of confronting their actions, transforming a private act into a public statement of protest.
